Four activists of United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) were shot dead in Borkol upazila of Rangamati Saturday morning.
Police said they have recovered two bodies and were continuing search till filing of this report at 1:30pm.
The UPDF alleged members of rival Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) carried out the attack, a claim that the PCJSS denied outright, reported our correspondent in Rangamati.
“None of our members are involved in any kind of murder or violence,” Sajib Chakma, assistant information and publicity secretary of PCJSS central committee, told The Daily Star over phone.
UPDF leaders identified the deceased as central committee member Animesh Chakma, 38, and party members Nobodeep Chakma, Pulok Jibon Chakma alias Fidek, 32, and Shukrasen Chakma, 37.
The other victim, Arun Chakma, 38, was the owner of the house where the attack took place.
Locals said the incident took place at around 9:00am when some UPDF men gathered at a house in Naraichhari village in Shuvolong.
“An armed group of JSS led by their head Promesh Chakma stormed into the house and opened fire on the gathering,” Shantideb Chakma, UPDF’s Rangamati district coordinator.
The brushfire left five dead on the spot.
Locals said a group of PCJSS, tipped-off that the UPDF men might hold a meeting at the Naraichhari house, took position near the house sometimes Friday night.
Another group of two, both masked, went to the place in a boat to join the advance team minutes before the incident.
