e-News® | The NEWS Company…DHAKA, Sept 29, 2014 – Detective Branch (DB) of police on Sunday night arrested a Bangladesh-born UK citizen from the city’s Kamlapur Railway Station for his suspected link to the Iraq-Syria based militant outfits Islamic State (IS) and Nusra Brigade.
Following information extracted from two detained militant operatives, a squad of the DB arrested Samiun Rahman alias Ibne Hamdan from Kamlapur Railway Station around 11.15 pm yesterday, joint commissioner of DB Monirul Islam told a press briefing at DMP media centre here today.
Six mobile phone sets, one British passport, an ATM card, bank cheque and other equipments from his possession, he also said. He (Samiun) came here (Bangladesh) to recruit operatives for the IS and Nusra Brigade to carry out arms struggle at Syria front and his aim is to establish al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) in Bangladesh and Myanmar, he informed.
Samiun actively participated in Jihadia activities as a member of Nusra Brigade during his stay in Syria from September to December in 2013, he said, adding that he also visited the African state Mauritania and Morocco to recruit members for the IS and Nusra.
During preliminary interrogation, Saimun confessed that Bangladeshi youths Asif Adnan alias Julkarnain, zaber, Abu Nayna, Abdul Karim and Abdullah are his accomplices, he said. Inspiring with the recent message of al-Qaeda chief Ayman Al Zawahiri, Saimun along with his accomplices have been planning to carry out subversive act to destabilize the country, he added.
