Election Commission (EC) Monday verbally postponed all process of holding bifurcated Dhaka City Corporations (DCCs) polls on basis of reports published in media regarding the HC order.
While contacted, an assistant returning officer of EC on condition of anonymity informed it to e-News.
“We have stopped all electoral activities on basis of media news,” he said.
But, senior assistant secretary (Election Management and Co-ordination) Farhad Hossain said, “We did not receive such kind of directives from the High Court. We informed about HC stay order from media reports.”
Regarding election an officer said, “Now, the decision of holding polls depends on the government.”
Earlier on Sunday, Lawyer of the Supreme Court Advocate Monjil Morshed filed the writ on behalf of Asaduzzaman Siddiqui, general secretary of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB).
Later, the High Court ordered for stopping the process of the DCC polls until Monday as the hearing of the writ petition by HRPB to be held at 12:45 pm on the day.
On April 12, the Supreme Court lawyer sent a legal notice to Chief Election Commissioner and two others to stop bifurcated Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) elections.
Advocate Monjil Morshed issued the notice on behalf of secretary of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh Advocate Asaduzzaman Siddique.
The two other respondents to the legal notice are Election Commission secretary and Dhaka district returning officer.
Monjil Morshed told banglanews, “As per section 27 and 28 of the ‘Local Government Act (City Corporation-2009)’ the EC has to fix the wards of newly formed City Corporation. The area of the wards should also have to be fixed.”
He said the election cannot be held if the sections of the act are not implemented.
DCC has not followed the act. So, action would be taken if the EC is not taken measures within 48 hours.
