Dubai is looking to open an additional passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport by 2020, making possible the handling of an expected passenger capacity of around 120-150 million per year.
Al Maktoum opened on 27 June 2010, and the second phase of the airport will commence following the completion of the design work that is currently underway. The first phase of the airport included a passenger terminal with a capacity of five million passengers per year.
Al Maktoum Airport forms the main part of the US$33 billion Dubai World Central (DWC), a planned residential, commercial and logistics complex in Jebel Ali. Upon completion, the airport will feature six parallel runways and concourses.
Al Maktoum International is claimed to be the world’s largest passenger and cargo hub and the facility will be ten times larger than Dubai International Airport and Dubai Cargo Village combined.
