e-News® | The NEWS Company…Gaibandha, October 06, 2015 : National University removed ruling party MP from Gaibandha-1 Manzurul Islam Liton from the president post of three colleges’ managing committees yesterday, three days after he allegedly shot and injured a 10-year-old in Gaibandha. Since the alleged shooting of the boy named Sourav, Liton and his family members have been on the run. The intelligence agencies are looking for Liton and would arrest him as soon as they find him, said Sundarganj police officer-in-charge Israil Hossain.
The colleges whose managing committees’ president posts Liton was holding are Dhubni Kanchibari College, Sundarganj Mahila College and Sundarganj DW College, according to a NU press release. According to the victim’s family, Sourav went for a morning walk with his uncle Shahjahan Ali on Friday. The ruling Awami League lawmaker who was then returning home in his car called them with a hand gesture. Being scared, Shahjahan started running away. Liton got angry at this and opened fire from his personal gun. Two bullets tore through Sourav’s right leg and another through the left. A class-IV student of Gopalcharan Govt Primary School, Sourav has been undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
His father Saju Mia, meanwhile, expressed frustration at his struggling to meet the expenses of his son’s treatment. “I am getting no help, financial or of any other sorts, from anyone. I need assistances for the better treatment of my son. “Only one of my relatives gave me Tk 1,000 for the treatment,” he said. Meanwhile, some local Awami League leaders in a statement brought several allegations against Liton. The lawmaker failed to tackle Jamaat-Shibir violence on February 28, 2013, in which four policemen and some other people were killed in the district, they said.
They also said he took away 100 tonnes of rice allocated for 50 madrasas and 50 temples as relief last year. The district administration looked into the accusation the same year and asked him to return rice, which he complied with. Masudul Islam Chanchal, president of Sundarganj Poura unit of AL; Sajedul Islam, organising secretary of Sundarganj upazila AL; Golam Kabir Mukul, president of upazila Awami Swechchhasebak League, and Golam Martuza Tuku, member of the same unit, were the signatories of the statement.
