Geoffrey Strong, President of Chevron Bangladesh Recently said, We are now the single largest producer of natural gas in Bangladesh, producing around 50% of the country’s total supply. We have grown production by more than 60%, or more than 400 MMscfd over the last five years.
” We are the largest payer of corporate income tax in Bangladesh. And we have the capability to do more. We are actively working on growing our production further with our flagship Bibiyana Expansion Project and the Jalalabad 3D seismic survey” he told a Dissection on Corporate Social Responsibility at the BGMEA Private Sector Forum held in BGMEA Office in Dhaka, 26 May 2013.
The U.S. Department of State’s Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy R. Sherman, Assistant Secretary of State for Economic & Business Affairs Jose W. Fernandez, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Democracy Human Rights & Labor Karen J. Hanrahan, the United States Ambassador to Bangladesh, Dan W. Mozena, Bangladesh Foreign Secretary, M Shahidul Haque BGMEA President, Md. Atiqul Islam also present there.
Geoffrey Strong said, Of our three priority areas, economic development is our highest priority. Improving the overall socioeconomic condition of a family means we are taking care of its other basic necessities including education for children and health care. Our economic development program was first launched in 2006. We run in partnership with three national NGOs in programs that now reach about 4,000 families in over 100 villages across all three field locations. We have launched nearly 1,500 small & medium size enterprises through this program so far.
Chevron present said, CSR is an important foundation of Chevron’s business practice globally. We are active in communities we operate in around the world through a wide variety of programs that focus on (1) economic development, (2) education and (3) health. And Bangladesh is no different. Chevron will continue to look into ways to support rehabilitation of savar tragedy affected families.
Education is also important, as it secures the futures of forthcoming generations. Chevron has constructed new school buildings, and extended existing campuses. In 2012 alone, we distributed 1,100 scholarships to underprivileged and meritorious students in 30 educational institutions. Our scholarship drive has been running since 2003. Chevron-supported schools have performed consistently well over the years. In the most recent school-leaving exams, students’ pass-rate range from 76% to 100%
He said, It’s really remarkable what a significant impact we can have at a relatively low cost by global standards.
