Parliamentary standing committees have demanded necessary government measures in the budget for the fiscal year 2012-13 for massive augment in electricity generation and ensuring adequate supply of essential commodities before the Ramadan.
Finance Minister A M A Muhith told reporters in a short briefing after a pre-budget meeting with all the parliamentary standing committee heads.
Muhith said the government provided about 2.2 million new connections during the last six months. The parliamentary committee heads have suggested the government to provide necessary electricity to these new subscribers.
The committee heads recommended scrutinising the country’s entire electricity generation and supply system, as the Power Division has failed to provide optimum electricity despite various efforts.
Muhith said the committee heads suggested reduction of tax on mobile SIM-card and internet cost to enhance the country’s existing tele-density.
He said currently about 3.0 million people are using internet. “We may intervene in this matter in the upcoming budget to facilitate using internet by more people.”
The finance minister said the JS body heads suggested attention from the government on building and supplying more sophisticated river vessels.
