e-News® | The NEWS Company…SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 09, 2016 : Lawmakers both from treasury and opposition benches today expressed their firm hope that the dream project Padma Bridge would be opened to traffic much ahead of the schedule in fulfillment of the commitment of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
They also said that Bangladesh would become a middle-income country before 2021 as the present government is relentlessly working towards advancing the national economy in a faster pace by speeding up development in all sectors. The lawmakers made these observations while taking part in a discussion on the President’s speech in the parliament saying, his 114-page statement has amply focused upon the tremendous development already done in the overall economy during the last seven years.
Earlier, they paid their heartfelt tribute to the memory of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibbur Rahman, four national leaders, martyred freedom fighters and also those who made their supreme sacrifices during the War of Liberation and all subsequent democratic movements in the country.
They said President Md. Abdul Hamid through his speech on January 20 in 2016, on the first day of the ninth session of the 10th parliament highlighted different positive aspects in social, political and economic sectors that set Bangladesh in motion on the wheels of a faster growth.
While pointing out the sector-wise development, the lawmakers singled out agriculture, industry, power and energy, road and highways infrastructure, education, health, food, land, ICT and many other sub-sectors, where the present government left marks of milestone in terms of development so far. During their speeches, the lawmakers termed the President’s speech as a proper documentation of the government development activities on the basis of future plans to turn Bangladesh into a developed country by 2041.
Taking part in the discussion, State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury said Bangladesh is moving forward under the bold and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by overcoming all sorts of conspiracies against the government. He said Bangladesh maintained its growth despite global economic recession that directly affected the economies of big countries around the world. Moreover, he said, the foreign reserves crossed $ 27 billion due to continuation of the present government.
“UN Secretary General proposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for becoming a member of a high level committee, because the Prime Minister raised the country’s image to a higher stage,” Saifuzzaman said.
Deputy Minister for Environment and Forest Abdullah Al Jacob said the present government has undertaken various plans to prevent environment pollution. The government formulated the Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan 2009 identifying 44 programmes to face the climate change impact, he said. Jacob said his ministry fined Taka 203 crore, 81 lakh, 35 thousand and 890 on 2,119 business establishments and realized Taka 131 crore, 54 lakh, 96 thousand and 188 as compensation from them.
Treasury bench members Golam Mostafa, Sohrab Uddin, Shafiqul Islam Shimul, Noorunnabi Chowdhury, Syeda Saira Mohsin, Mahbub Ali, Begum Pinu Khan, Begum Ayesha Ferdous, Begum Rahima Akhter, and opposition member Shahnara Begum, Bangladesh Jatiya Party member M Ruhul Amin took part in the discussion on the 12th day of the ninth session with Deputy Speaker M Fazley Rabbi Miah in the chair.
