Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that over 13,000-MW electricity will be added to national grid by 2016.
Sheikh Hasina told the House on September 5 in response to a question from independent member M Fazlul Azim during the Prime Minister’s question answer session.
While disclosing her government’s plan to resolve the country’s power crisis, she said 1986-MW power would be added this year while 3339-MW, 3297-MW, 2182-MW and 2350-MW would in added respectively in the 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
She said under the government plan, 27 power plants with capacity of 4830- MW electricity are being constructed and the plants will be go for commissioning from 2012 to 2014.
The PM said the present government after taking office has undertaken many short, medium and long-term projects with a target to produce 24,000-MW power. Under the plan, she said 51 power plants with capacity of 3595-MW have already gone for commercial production, reaching the country’s total power generation capacity to 8315- MW.She said in the month of Ramadan country’s highest demand for power was 6350-MW while average daily power generation was 6000-MW in the backdrop of availability of fuel. From July 20, she said, there was no load shedding from generation side.
The Prime Minister said a total of 18 Independent Power Plant (IPP) and nine public sector power plants would go for generation by 2016 after construction. Besides, 25 power projects including 17 IPPs now remained under purchasing process.
