Bangladesh is expecting to link with its second undersea cable by 2014 to ensure uninterrupted internet connectivity, the national news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported online. The cost of the project is estimated at BDT 4.50 billion, said Monwar Hossain, managing director of Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd (BSCCL). He said BSCCL will invest BDT 2.50 billion which it plans to collect from the stock market. An international bid will be floated in July to invite undersea cable consortium companies. The second submarine cable will follow the route of the current SEA-ME-WE 4 cable and will reach Japan via Hong Kong. At present, Bangladesh is connected with the information superhighway by SEA-ME-WE 4, its only submarine cable. Earlier, a local private firm applied to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for a second submarine cable. But the regulator rejected the proposal as unsatisfactory.
