Internet service providers (ISPs) should make it harder for children to access porn and bomb-making websites or face tough new laws, the Government has said.
Speaking at culture questions in the Commons, backbench Conservative MP Andrea Leadsom praised a system used by TalkTalk.
She said it “enables families to keep their children safe not just from internet porn but also from suicide and how-to-make-bomb sites and all sorts of unsuitable sites”.
Mrs Leadsom, MP for South Northamptonshire, claimed: “Unless ISPs do more to enable family-friendly systems to protect children, this Government will have to legislate.”
Junior culture minister Ed Vaizey told MPs: “I prefer self-regulation to legislation, but the mood of this House is for action and to see legislation.
“This is not about censorship; it’s about giving families tools to protect their children from inappropriate content.
“We rely on them (ISPs) to come up with solutions.”
