e-News® | The NEWS Company…GAIBANDHA : A total of 35 government primary schools under four upazilas of the district have been closed down temporarily as the flood water entered into the class rooms.
Due to onrush of hilly waters from the upstream and incessant rain in last couple of days, flood like situation had created in chars and the Brahmaputra river basin areas in the district recently. For this, the schools went under knee to waist deep water causing the authorities concerned to close down the schools temporarily considering the safety of the students. Of the total, some 15 schools are in Sundarganj upazila, 16 in Fulchhari upazila, 3 in Sadar upazila and one in Shaghata upazila. On the other hand, with the rise and fall of the water level in the river, the erosion has taken serious turn at different places of the upazilas leaving the riverside people worried.
Four primary schools located at the riverside are threatened due to erosion. Any time, the schools can be devoured by the mighty river Brahmaputra, said an official of education department. The erosion-threatened schools are Kachirchar Government Primary School under Sadar upazila, Garamara Government Primary School under Shaghata upazila, Tepuliarchar Community School under Fulchhari upazila and Bhati Kapasia Government School under Sundarganj upazila, sources said.
District primary education officer (DPEO) AKM Amirul Islam said the academic activities of the institutes would resume when the flood situation improves. In reply to a query, the DPEO said necessary measures have been taken to sell the concrete infrastructures of erosion-threatened schools through auction as the river came very near to the schools.
