e-News® | The NEWS Company…DHAKA, Aug 26, 2014 – The flood situation of the districts near the river basin of the Brahmaputra and Jamuna likely to be unchanged for next seventy-two hours. Besides, the flood situation of Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrokona districts likely to be improved for next 48-hours.
Ripon Karmakar, Assistant Engineer Flood Forecast and Warning Centre under the Water Development Board, told on Tuesday. The water level of the rivers adjacent to the Dhaka city would continue to surge as the water level of the Balu River is flowing 55 cm below from the danger level, said the official, adding that the water of Balu River rose to 8 centimeters for the last 24 hours. Even the official said the water level of the river Buriganga, Turag, Shitalakhya and Tongi canal is rising. He said the lower region of the Balu river and Mathertek area is being inundated due to water level rise of the Balu river.
The Storm Information Centre of the Water Development Board also informed that the water of the rivers is flowing over the danger level at 19 points across the country. The river water marked rise at 43-points and declined at 32 points across the country, it said. The water level at the seven points in the country remained unchanged, the storm information centre added. Meanwhile, the flood situation of Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Munshiganj districts has declined. Although the water flow of Jamuna river marked low at Sirajganj but the flood situation so far would not develop.
The World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations has launched biscuit distribution programme among 30,000 flood affected people at eight upazilas under Kurigram, Sirajganj and Jamalpur districts. More fresh areas under the upazilas of Kurigram Sadar, Nageshwari, Bhurungamri, Ulipur, Chilmari, Rowmari and Rajibpur also have been inundated, said the official sources, adding that the acute crisis of food, pure water, fuel and cattle food already has been emerged at the disaster prone areas.
