Sure, we’ve already heard about LG’s new flagship, the Optimus G Pro, and its younger sibling, the Optimus G, but now we’ve had a chance to see them in the flesh.
The LG Optimus G Pro has a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, a 13-megapixel camera, 2GB of DDR RAM, and 32 GB of storage memory, expandable via microSD memory cards. With so many spec sheets floating around the MWC these days, it’s easy to forget how big a 5.5-inch screen is, but that changes when you take the device into your hand.
For comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy S III has a 4.8-inch screen, and the iPhone 5 has a 4-inch screen. The line between tablets and smartphones has officially been blurred, and the Optimus G Pro is a good example of that — it’s bigger than some tablets we’ve seen but it still feels like a smartphone in your hand.
While we have no objective means to measure its quality here, the full HD screen looks gorgeous compared to any new Android device we’ve seen. LG has a nifty comparison of the Optimus G Pro’s screen vs. a generic AMOLED screen, and if we’re to believe them (and our eyes), the AMOLED pales in comparison.
The device’s build feels solid, although perhaps a bit too light in your hand. Call me an iPhone 4 snob, but I prefer it when a phone this big feels like it’s filled with something solid instead of air. The Optimus G Pro is also incredibly thin for its size, and — with its curved case edges — it feels a bit like a bigger, improved Galaxy S III, and that can’t be a bad thing.
