e-News® | The NEWS Company…DHAKA, Feb 20, 2015 : Visiting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today expressed her government’s desire to construct “Bangabandhu Bhaban” in Kolkata in West Bengal after the name of Bangladesh’s Founding Father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
“We want to construct Bangabandhu Bhaban in Kolkata in honour of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of Bangladesh’s Great War of Liberation and millions of freedom fighters,” she said during interactions with eminent litterateurs and cultural personalities at Hotel Sonargaon in the capital.
Besides, she said that she wants to introduce a chair in Kolkata University after the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman although Bangladesh government has earlier set up “Bangladesh Gallery” at Shantiniketon in West Bengal. When eminent cultural personality Nasir Uddin Yusuf asked whether No-8 Theater Road in Kolkata where Secretariat of the then Mujibnagar Government was set up would be announced as “Bangladesh Bhaban”, Mamata said she would look into the matter. “I will talk to the concerned authorities as the Bhaban is being looked after by a trust,” said Mamata, who arrived here last night on a three-day visit.
The West Bengal chief minister said the two Bengals have a deep-rooted relationship over decades as many renewed personalities, especially in cultural arena, have settled in West Bengal from Bangladesh. “Their presence has enriched our culture and heritage,” she added. Mamata laid stress on further enhancing cultural relations between the two countries for the welfare of the Bengali-speaking people of the two Bengals. Members of her delegate including filmmaker Goutam Ghosh, actors Prosenjit and Dev, singer Nachiketa, and eminent actors and singers from Bangladesh, among others, were present at the function. Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pankaj Saran and Prof Anisuzzaman were also present.
