DHAKA, July 8 – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today stressed the need for making the country self- dependent instead of dependence on thers as she said no country could be developed without becoming self- dependent.
The Prime Minister expressed the view when a delegation of Prokaushali, Krishibid and Chikitsak (Prokrichi) Central Coordination Council called on her at her office here this morning.
After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed the reporters.
The Prime Minister also underscored the need for decentralisation of power as she said the country’s desired development could not be possible without decentralization.
“We do not believe in the capital-based development rather we want to take power up to the village level as the country’s expected uplift is not possible through it,” she said.
Placing emphasis on reorganising all tiers of local government bodies for country’s sustainable uplift, Sheikh Hasina said the development in education, health and infrastructure should be made locally through a proper plan.
Adviser to the Prime Minister HT Imam, Prokrichi President Engineer Nurul Huda, Secretary General AFM Bahauddin Nasim, General Secretary of Institution of Engineers Bangladesh Engineer Abdus Sabur, President of Krishibid Institution Bangladesh Prof Nitish Chandra Devnath, Bangladesh Medical Association President Prof Dr Mahmud Hassan and Secretary General Prof Dr Sharfuddin Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Sheikh Md Wahid Uz Zaman, PMO Secretary Molla Waheeduzzaman, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Abdus Sobhan Sikdar and Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were also present on the occasion.
Referring to her government’s Vision 2021 programme,the Prime Minister said the aim of the programme is to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income country by 2021 by making its independence meaningful and building the country imbued with the spirit of the War of Liberation.
Sheikh Hasina recalled the contribution of engineers, agriculturists and doctors in all movements of the country and said they have played an important role in all movements in the past.
She highlighted her government’s stunning success in the fields of agriculture, education, health, economy, power, women empowerment and social safety net and said engineers, agriculturists and physicians have important contribution to achieve these successes.
She said Bangladesh has maintained over six percent growth rate in the last three years and it has been established as a role model in the world due to various pragmatic steps of the government.
The Prime Minister asked the authorities concerned to formulate and implement development projects bringing the entire picture of the country under consideration.
She said the present government has recruited a huge number of doctors, engineers and agriculturalists in the last three years by maintaining transparency. “No governments in the past gave such a huge number of appointments,” she said.
Giving patient hearing to various problems of the professional groups, Sheikh Hasina said many of their problems have already been solved and the remaining problems would be solved soon through a committee comprising the representatives of all stakeholders.
