In a latest development, Awami League Leader Suranjit Sengupta Monday decided to resign as the Railway minister following the recent money scandal.
He said, “I will submit my resignation letter to the Prime Minister admitting responsibilities of all successes and failures of the ministry.”
The minister came up with the latest development at a press conference in the city’s Rail Bhaban in the afternoon.
He, however, said: “I had no direct and indirect involvement in the April 9 incident.”
On Sunday night, Suranjit met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Gano Bhaban.
He said, “In the meeting I informed her about my decision to resign and she permitted.”
The outgoing minister also hoped that the incident would be investigated properly.
“I also decided not to face the press before completion of the investigation, as it might influence the pace of investigation,” he added.’
On April 9, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained Suranjit Sengupta’s APS Omar Faruq Talukder, Railway GM Yusuf Ali Mridha and Divisional Commandant Enamul Huq when a car carrying them entered the BGB Headquarters at about 11:30 pm.
Later, the BGB members recovered Tk 70 lakh and kept the two detained in Pilkhana. But, the BGB men released them with the money and vehicle the following day.
Later, the Railways Ministry formed two inquiry committees – one to investigate the involvement of Mridha and another to investigate Faruq’s link with the incident.
