BMW has revealed a near production-ready version of the upcoming M5 saloon. Although still officially a concept, much is already known about the new M5, which made its debut at the Shanghai Motor Show and will go on sales towards the latter end of this year. Power comes from a high-revving V8 engine with twin turbo technology, which marks a first for BMW’s M division, having previously used naturally aspirated powerplants.
The 4,395cc unit will be good for around 525bhp – some 50bhp more than the outgoing 5-liter V10 unit, which is being retired after only seven years of use. New M5’s V8 is based on the X5 M and X6 M heart, but changes have been made to the induction and exhaust systems.
Although being a performance vehicle first and foremost, expect the M5’s S63-based unit to include a stop/start system to improve fuel efficiency. Other eco-friendly measures include brake energy recuperation and a disengaging alternator.
