The United Kingdom (UK) is interested to set up a renewable energy research institute in Bangladesh for developing new technology to face the challenges of climate change. It was disclosed when a six-member UK delegation headed by chief scientist of the Department of Energy and Climate Change Dr Nafis Miah called on Environment and Forest Minister Dr Hassan Mahmud at his secretariat office on February 29.
Dr Nafis mentioned the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Power Ministry of Bangladesh and the Energy and Climate Change Department of UK on February 26. Under the MOU, the UK government wants to make a separate research institute in Bangladesh with the aim to provide modern services for the people relating to generation of renewable energy and its transmission.
The institute will help in capacity building and provide expert services in developing national inventory of carbon emissions from the energy sector and harnessing CDM benefits from energy sector projects, sources said.
The UK delegation expressed the hope that this research institute would play a big role to increase efficiency in production of renewable energy in Bangladesh. In this respect, the minister said setting up of a research institute here with joint effort of UK and Bangladesh would play a significant role in meeting the country’s growing demand of electricity.
