The BBC is to broadcast in 3D for the first time next month when it screens the Wimbledon singles finals.
The climaxes of the men’s and women’s competitions are among a number of “editorial experiments” the corporation is carrying out.
The broadcasts, which coincide with the 125th anniversary of the tournament, will only be available to homes with 3D-enabled TVs and an HD box.
It has already been announced that the finals will be beamed into some cinemas in 3D, plus the BBC is to arrange a number of free public screenings.
The TV broadcasts – in conjunction with the All England Lawn Tennis Club and Sony – will be free to air on the BBC’s HD channel.
The finals – which take place on July 2 and 3 – will also be screened on BBC1 as usual.
Paul Davies, executive producer for BBC Sport, said: “This unique 3D transmission is the latest innovation to bring to life all the tension, drama and excitement of one of the most iconic sporting arenas in the world.”
